Fireside Five For Friday

It’s my favorite day of the week! Is it just me or do you sing the song “It’s Friday” every single Friday morning?! That’s normal, right? It’s such a catchy tune and really gets the day off to a good start. Like always, this week has flown by and we’re getting ready to start an amazing weekend with friends!

As is my new Friday tradition, I’m linking up with the gals at the good life blog, A. Liz Adventures, Carolina Charm, and Hello!Happiness for 5 on Friday. Click on the logo to link up too!Fireside Five For Friday

ONE-

The new valences are up! I went with a pale peach for the fabric. We’ll get a full tutorial on how we made them on the blog soon 🙂 But for now, I’m just enjoying another thing checked off the nursery list! P.S.- ignore the gross red rocker…it will (hopefully) be recovered soon!

TWO-

Another shower! My BFFs Hannah and Carly threw me the most special, thoughtful, beautiful shower! I loved every bit of it, didn’t want it to end, and got sad when I left knowing that it was my last first friend baby shower. Aww, tear! (Note little miss Georgia putting a rattle in my mouth during the picture, haha)

THREE-

The dining room paint job is complete! I got the OK from my OB last week to paint….if it was “well ventilated”. Pregnancy isn’t going to stop this DIYer from painting! I just wanted to make sure it was safe for the babe. So last Saturday, while I went to town on the dining room, Eric painted the guest bathroom (more on that later). It feels so good to have it done! The red that was there before just wasn’t working with the flow of the house and I think this green is a much better fit. It has definitely taken some getting used to…and it didn’t exactly match the paint swatch I had color matched, but it’s growing on me.

FOUR-

Check out those sweet new garage doors! When we moved into our house in February, the garage doors worked, but were rickety, let a draft in and weren’t exactly pleasing to the eye. So when we saw a sale on these beauties at Home Depot, we decided to order them. Eric did an amazing job at installing them. I’m always amazed at how the guy figures out all of these complicated projects. Such a handy man!

FIVE-

Please pardon the grainy picture. My BFF Hannah made me this amazing bunting with Charlotte’s name on it for my shower! What a crafty little gal she has become. I literally had just been looking for bunting exactly like this on Etsy, so she read my mind! I love the fact that Charlotte will have something handmade in her room from her Auntie Hannah! So, so sweet 🙂

Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!

“Sure Dad, c’mon up and we will play golf or something”.  “Yeah Andrew, we will just relax and do some grilling”.  I had em’ right where I wanted them.  Little did they know that they were going to have to deal with the tree of torture: 5 inch thorns and all.

Both my Dad and best friend knew they were going to get in some good old fashion manual labor.  I can’t say it enough, Kelli and I are very lucky and blessed to have people like them in our lives; that no questions asked, will come up for a weekend and help out with our crazy forest house!

Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!

Super Pumped to have the help of these fellas.  One project off the list!!

This Locust tree was only a small part of our weekend project, but it is definitely the most intimidating.  Those thorns are long, sharp, and will go right though a pair of shoes.  I also found out that if they stick you, the very tip breaks off and stays in you.  I’m living proof of that…

Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!

Here was the before picture of the house.  As you can see, this side of the house needs a little TLC.  By a “little”, I mean a lot of work for three guys, plus some work from my wonderful wife and her tag-a-long Char Char.  Kelli is not a big fan of that name for Charlotte but until something else pops in my head that’s what daddy’s nickname for our mini is going to be.  Sorry, I digressed.

Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!
I’m picturing settlers back in the frontier days making some pretty intense weapons out of these things.  I mean seriously, look at them! They’re straight out of a Steven King book.
Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!
With all that said, naturally the first thing to do would be to climb up a ladder straight into the thick of things.
Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!
Bush, meet Dad.  Dad, meet bush.  It just needed a little hair cut.
(Both my dad and I were blessed with low maintenance hair, aka we are bald.  But, if we did have hair, this bush is what I assume it would look like in the morning.)
Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!
Continuing on the trimming theme, we decided to take out these green things from beside the house. Are they a tree, a bush, a weed?  Those mixed messages are probably the main reason it got the ax…I mean saw.
Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!
After we got everything cut down prepared, we were ready to start re-laying the brick edging.
Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!
How many guys does it take to screw in a light bulb…wait, I mean lay down bricks in a neat line?
Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!
Bring on the greenery!
Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!
Kelli and I don’t get a ton of chances to go on “errands” with the family.  I really enjoyed the time of sifting through the 50% off area at the greenhouse.  Gotta love deals and gotta love family!!

Honestly, I don’t know what this thing is.  I’m sure if I asked Kelli she would know, but it’s 12:30 a.m. now and she is fast asleep.  Whatever it is, it is one of my favorite plants.  I love the color of the leaves without any type of flowering or blooming.
Project: Dont get Stuck with the 5 inch Thorns!
Throughout the 3 years of total home ownership and the variety of landscaping projects we’ve done (see Sidney example 1 or example 2), we’ve learned a couple lessons.
One is to always stage what you plant.  It’s the easiest way to determine whether you will like the arrangements of your plants.
The other is to keep in mind that your plants will grow, so be sure to space them out.

There’s “miss green thumb” herself.  Even with a bun in the oven she is still out there pitching in.  What a trooper!!  Can’t keep her away from planting.

One of the last things we had to take care of was the random bench on the entry way.  A couple of bolts and a few screws and it’s outta here.

Here’s the rag tag trio of landscapers.  Without them I would probably still be stuck in the thorny tree!

Barkley was the supervisor for this project.  As you can see, he takes his job very seriously.

Fireside Five for Friday!

Happy Friday!! As usual, this week has FLOWN by! We had something going on every night of the week (all fun things), so that makes it go especially quick. This weekend, we are looking forward to painting and going to my second baby shower! Well, one of us is not so excited about painting…but the end result is always so satisfying that it’ll all be worth it, right?!

Here’s what we’ve been up to this week! (P.S.- These are all phone photos so bear with me. They’re not the best quality!)

This happened last night. Hahaha. Eric got to wear the sympathy belly at baby class! The women got to make their men do something particularly difficult while wearing the belly, so I had him sit on the ground and pretend to paint his nails and try to pick things up off the ground. He was a champ! I think he got a little taste of what it’s like to carry around some extra belly weight 🙂

Eric’s family and best friend visited last weekend and look what they did! I’ll have a whole post devoted to this project, so get excited for that. They worked so hard and should be super proud of themselves. It looks awesome and has really changed the look of the house!

Paint Swatches!! You know I’m a DIY freak when the sight of paint swatches gets me SO excited! These are the four colors I picked out for our bathrooms, dining room, basement, craft room, AND front door. Can you guess which colors go where?? I guess you’ll have to wait to find out!

Looking at this picture, I’m sure you can’t make out what these babies are. Use your imagination. They’re SOON going to be window valences! Eric put them together and now it’s on to my portion of the project- adding the batting and fabric. That’s on my list of weekend to-dos. We’re doing these wooden valences in the nursery and our bedroom. Again, there will be a whole post devoted to these beauties, so get ready for that!

I saved the best for last! THIS is my new diaper bag!! I’m just absolutely in love. I’m such a cheapy that I’ve never made the plunge into buying a designer purse. So, when I saw this Vera Bradley diaper bag on sale, I made the impulsive decision to buy it! And I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. There’s just enough pockets, it’s the perfect size, and there’s a fold out changing pad. Perfection! Now, I can’t wait to fill ‘er up with baby goodies!

My First Baby Shower!

We have officially been showered!

My first baby shower was with our family girlfriends in Salina. I feel so lucky to have so many amazing family friends through my parents. They have a wonderful group of lifelong friends who really feel more like family. I love being around all of the women and always have such a fun time! I was given so many things for the new baby to make me feel prepared and ready for her arrival. The hostesses did such a great job, and if any of you are reading this, THANK YOU again!

On to the fun- here’s the shower in photos…
